So, you’ve been thinking about becoming a graphic designer? That’s great! But are you sure you have the chops? Have you asked yourself recently, “What does it take to be a graphic designer?”. Welcome to the club, even after 15 years I ask myself the same question. It’s a good thing. Graphic design is a constantly evolving industry, and you have to keep up with the changes. It takes more than a creative mind. You have to be technical, and be able to ask the right questions. Take a look at this wonderful infographic that walks you through the decision process and maps it out with style. The below infographic comes via Michael Stout who states, ” This was meant to be a fun handout at a high school career fair to interest kids in graphic design as a job”. Thanks to designer, Michael Stout via Visual.ly for sharing the great design work with us at PBeCreative.com! Just click to enlarge.

With so many people these days thinking a designer is a person with a computer, I like that you pointed out that having SOME hand skills is crucial. Overall cute info graphic idea, but your flow chart fails to address the issue of following good typographic standards in content and execution. I am a stickler for type, and there are many major no-no’s in here…

I agree with your comment about the typography and typographic standards in general(especially in ifographics for web). Isn’t it funny how poor use of type can be bothersome to designers? I often find myself driving down the expressway, critiquing the designs of billboards.
